Crewdson was born in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. He attended John Dewey High School, graduating early.
As a teenager, he was part of a punk rock group called The Speedies that hit the New York scene. Their song, "Let Me Take Your Photo" proved to be prophetic to Crewdson's future career. In 2005, Hewlett Packard used the song in advertisements to promote its digital cameras.
In the mid 1980s, Crewdson studied photography at SUNY Purchase, near Port Chester, NY. He received his Master of Fine Arts from Yale University. He has taught at Sarah Lawrence, Cooper Union, Vassar College, and Yale University, where he has been on the faculty since 1993. He is now a professor at the Yale University School of Art. In 2012, he was the subject of the feature documentary film Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters.
Crewdson is represented by Gagosian Gallery worldwide and by White Cube Gallery in London.

This image stood out to me because of the way he makes the colours of the flowers pop, and the colours in the back are all dull. Yet there's still bright light towards the bottom half of the photograph. He uses leading lines by using the lights as the guide lines, I noticed he does this with all of his images, the person (who is the always the subject of the image) has a ray of light shining over them. I like this because i believe it gives the viewers an idea of where in the image their attention should be averted to. What made this photograph stand out to me even more is how the women's facial expression shows she's upset, the dull colours in the background agree with this, as dull colours are most commonly associated with negativity and sadness. This is hugely contrasted by the bright, beautiful flowers, which are commonly associated with positivity and happiness. You could also suggest from this picture that the dull background represents her past, which is behind her, and the flowers could represent a fresh start, or a new beginning. Overall, I quite like his work, as it can be interpreted in a variety of ways, this would attract a larger audience as different people would see different meanings behind his work.
